At Achiever Institute, we are extremely proud to provide our students with a highly qualified and experienced teaching staff. Our teachers bring their diverse backgrounds, wealth of knowledge, and talent for working with kids to create an exciting learning environment for all of our students.

  • Ms. Cathy Yang Program Director

    Teacher Background: Cathy is a certified music teacher of MTAC (Music Teacher Association of California) and ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music Association). She received her Bachelor’s degree in Flute and Piano in Taiwan and her Masters of Fine Arts in Musical Performance in the US. She was a flute and piano teacher at Nota Music World, a music docent at James Leitch Elementary School, and an early childhood music teacher at Jai’s Montessori. She is currently a Flutist in the professional flute ensemble, the Magic Flute Choir of San Mateo. Cathy has been teaching music for more than 10 years, and she believes in the happiness that playing music can bring.

  • Mrs. Feliza Hsu Program Director

    Teacher Background: Feliza has a Bachelors of Arts degree in Broadcasting and a Masters in Theater Arts from San Jose State. She was a reporter for ETTV America and is currently sought out as a host for Bay Area events by the World Journal and SVCACA. Feliza was the stage manager for Company One, a musical theater group, and she has taught Chinese and Drama at several schools in the Bay Area since 1996.

  • Ms. Janie Driscoll

    Teacher Background: Janie Driscoll holds a Master of Arts degree in Education from the University of San Francisco, as well as the Professional Clear teaching credential awarded by the State of California. Ms. Driscoll teaches academic writing skills to students in grades one through six in the Fremont community. In addition, Ms. Driscoll works as an Education Specialist, most recently in the Union City and Oakland public schools. While teaching in Oakland, Ms. Driscoll served as a professional coach for new teachers. Ms. Driscoll’s background includes an M.B.A. degree awarded by Golden Gate University in San Francisco, and a B.A. in English from Emmanuel College in Boston, Massachusetts.

  • Ms. Priya Batheja

    Teacher Background: Priya Batheja is a resource specialist at Junction K-8 School in the Livermore District where she works with students with mild to moderate learning disabilities. She graduated from Hayward University with degrees in Liberal Studies and Psychology and received her teaching credential from Project Pipeline in Concord. She is equipped to teach language arts, writing and math from grade k to 8. Priya brings 11 years of public school teaching experience to Achiever Institute. Her expertise lies in using multi-modal strategies that include visual, auditory and tactile learning styles to instruct her students. She had worked with a challenging population from East Palo Alto and Alum Rock District. Her passion is making a difference in the lives of children and on Saturdays she has been teaching Indian culture at Washington High School for the last fifteen years. She truly believes that in order to reach out to students a teacher must inspire and empower and not just instruct and inform.

  • Mrs. Kathryn A. Farley

    Teacher Background: Kathryn is a teacher in the San Lorenzo Unified School District and the Newark Unified School District. She teaches K-6 students and specializes in innovative, individualized lessons for gifted children. Kathryn received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Holy Names College.

  • Ms. Yu-Chi Tung

    Teacher Background: Ms. Tung graduated from Tamkang University in Taiwan, with a BA in Chinese Language and Literature. After she came to US, she received her Early Childhood Education degree from Ohlone College. She has been teaching in elementary schools since 1980, and she has been teaching Chinese at Fremont Chinese School for over 18 years. Ms. Tung is also a Para Educator for the Fremont Unified School District. Ms. Tung believes Chinese learning should be fun and useful. She likes to use games, story-telling, drawing and singing in her Chinese classes. She specializes in teaching both simplified and traditional Chinese, so students become comfortable reading and writing in both standards.

  • Mr. Shawn Lei

    Teacher Background: Mr. Lei is majoring in animation at the Academy of Art University. His artwork combines drawing, animation, and manga. He specializes in creating 2D characters with hand-made backgrounds in storyboard, and he has produced his own 3D animation movies. Mr. Lei is also an expert with Adobe Photoshop and Adobe After Effects.

  • Mr. Ming Shen Huo

    Teacher Background: Mr. Huo received his Bachelor’s degree from Huanain University majoring in oil painting. Since 1984, he has worked with many international movie and television production companies as a cartoon artist, including Black Cat Detective in China, The Three Kingdoms in Japan, The Mozart Orchestra in Spain, and Tarzan in the US. Since 2001, Mr. Huo has created comics for newspapers in China. He has held art exhibitions throughout the Bay Area showing different mediums, such as water color, oil painting, and Chinese calligraphy. He is also well known in Bay Area as a professional art judge for numerous art contests. Mr. Huo enjoys teaching young children, and he has a knack for making Chinese calligraphy easy to understand. His main goal is to help each of his students discover their own talent for art.

  • Mr. Chris Torres

    Teacher Background: Chris Torres is a nationally renowned scholastic chess coach working in both Bakersfield and the San Francisco Bay Area. His classes have attracted players of strengths ranging from rank beginners to world champions. A chess professional since 1998, Chris is widely recognized as one of the main driving forces behind the explosion in popularity and sudden rise in quality of scholastic chess in California. Currently, Chris Torres has the ranking of candidate master.

  • Mr. Jason Chou

    Teacher Background: Jason has Bachelors degrees in Business and Computer Science from the University of Pennsylvania. He is a program manager at Microsoft. As a public speaker and performer, Jason has extensive experience that ranges from emceeing events throughout the Bay Area, performing for Vice President Joe Biden, competing as a speech state finalist, presenting for international case competitions, and publishing speeches.

  • Ms. Dora Chua

    Teacher Background: Dora has a Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering from Princeton University. She is an engineer at Merck and has extensive experience in public speaking through presenting research at conferences and serving on the board of Princeton’s cultural center. She represented her organizations at the EPA National Design Expo and was a winner at the AIChE regional conference.
